It has been exactly one month since I last did a post here. Back from holiday today I cannot resist a short note on the financing of innovation and private equity in general.
Capital Finance gave on July, 9th the following 3-year investment trends for Limited Partners in private equity. Interestingly enough venture and buy-out are mostly up.

In the light of the subprime crisis and the probable increase in interest rates in the EU, it would be interesting to ask the exact same question now…
And to finish on a good note, just listen to this one found on Marc Andressen’s blog. As the City is about to let go of a bunch of bankers it gives interesting insights as to what the mood is in the US!

Just a quick note to share this good paper found on Wired about pressures facing the Venture Capital industry and its limited returns (on average that is; if you only backed NSCP, YHOO and GOOG you’re good!)
My take on this one is that as soon as the first major failure hits the fan with PE leveraged deals, the VC asset class will automagically be considered again, if only to diversify your portfolio’s risk.

I am very proud to announce that “IDEES de Design” is officially launched here in France. Its goal is to promote digital design, and especially interactive designers. These skills become more and more critical as the digital side of our daily lives gets bigger and bigger.
The IDEES program has been around for more than a year now. “IDEES de Design” will follow suite and embrace the global digital design ecosystem. We do believe it is both an economic challenge for both our partners and customers but also a national one when it comes to promoting our digital assets.
The press release (in French) can be found below.

Capital Finance just released its survey on the French venture capital market for the first 5 months of the year.
May was a busy month with close to 50M euros invested in start-ups. Two thirds are for biotechnology firms and a good 28% of these funds are dedicated to first round financing, which is a good sign of the vitality of the French market.

So you think you know what “semantic web” stands for? Well, sure you do. But how does that translate in how you browse through your daily overdose of information?
I have tried Blue Organizer over the week-end and find it both easy to use and ultra convenient. Basically, it enables you to find information that is related to what you are currently reading and also organize, publish and share information. It is an add-on to Firefox definitely worth trying as it saves you an incredible amount of time. It is probably quite a hint that Union Sq. Ventures decided to fund these guys!

As reported by Capital Finance, Incisive Media-Candover data on PE activity in Europe in Q12007 are quite telling.
As far as traditional PE goes, no less than 400+ deals have been done, a strong increase year-on-year.
On the venture side, early-stage deals are taking the lion’s share and activity in France is still very strong, a close second behind the UK and far from Germany where the local VC industry has yet to catch-up with the market’s potential.
